Looking into my "Crystal Ball" for the future of Mission and this is what I see. How about you?
Arts and Culture - Through effective budgets, dynamic fund-raising initiatives, and unique partnering with various community groups and private enterprise the "Arts and Culture" community in Mission is thriving. The "Mission Arts Council" has been the driving force and Kudos to them!
Downtown - The downtown
core, or more specifically First Ave is comprised of ground
level boutiques, cafes, restaurants, nightclubs, cabarets,
dinner theatres, specialty shops providing unique niche
products. The 2nd floor of these buildings have offices of all
types, with apartments on the 3rd floor.
During the day the office workers frequent the shops and
restaurants and in the evenings couples and friends stroll, shop
and meet in the cafes, restaurants and nightclubs for an evening
out.
MissionFest is an annual event attracting people from
neighbouring municipalities to come and enjoy the "Street Party"
scene. Some even say it is similar to a mini "Mardi Gras!" and
lasts a whole long weekend.
Economic Development - We have a nice clean, environmentally friendly business base that provides decent paying jobs to local residents. That's because we've provided our Economic Development Officer with the tools to help insure that Mission attracts that type of industry. After all, the EDO is in fact the "Salesrep" for Mission. And as everyone knows, a good "Salesrep" more than pays for themselves with increased sales. We have a great many Mission residents now working in Mission. And the tax base isn't as skewed to residential as it once was.
Residential Development - OK folks so here is the undeniable truth. Mission is within an hour of a major city, and as such it DID eventually experience "Urban Sprawl." Sorry but that is just the way it was, no getting around it. What NEEDED to be done was for council to step up and be the "Watchdog" on development. I see nice environmentally conscious spacious subdivisions harmonious with parks, trees, green space, waterways and wetlands all preserved. It WAS done, it just needed to be monitored and implemented appropriately.
Seniors - Our Seniors are
enjoying their own centre that focuses on their well-being and
quality of life. The centre has easy access via public transit
and provides exercise classes, technology classes, crafts, games
etc.
They no longer have to leave Mission as there is ample housing
and long-term care here in town. It is through budgeting and
partnering with various community groups on several successful
fund-raising initiatives that this has been achieved.
Tourism - The Tourism
component is thriving within Mission. This often overlooked
piece of the puzzle has been nurtured and developed as part of
the EDO's mandate and is part of overall Economic Development.
Mission is now a worldwide destination for sport fishing. Not to
mention a daily or weekend destination for other lower mainland
residents coming to enjoy the close proximity, outdoor
activities, festivals, etc.
In 2011 the area west of Stave Lake was designated as
recreational land use. Not only is the Zajac Ranch there, but
there are Lodges, campsites, zip-lining ventures, hiking, ATV
and Horse trail rides, Mission even has it's own money making
campground there.
Youth - The youth of Mission
are engaged in the community through various groups and
activities as brought forth by the "Mission Youth Council." The
MYC was an initiative brought forth by Councilman Hockridge in
2012 and is comprised of high school seniors and youths in their
20s as voted in by their peers.
The MYC is tasked to find programs and activities that the youth
of Mission require to keep them involved and entertained.
